ANGULAR RANGE COMPENSATION: In ballistics, the sighting distance and the actual distance between a shooter and his target vary according to the angle of fire. In fact, the distance from the ground (and therefore subject to the earth's attraction) covered by a projectile fired upwards or downwards will be shorter than the distance in the horizontal. The projectile will be subject to the earth's attraction over a shorter distance and its point of impact will therefore be higher.
